Using Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid lynx) connecting iPad - absolutely nothing happens. idevicesyslog ends with thousands of broken pipe messages. USB cable works on windows, all other idevicexxx commands return nothing... very discouraging. what should I do?

Please provide the version of libimobildevice you have installed (probably too old juding from Ubuntu 10.04) and the iOS version you have installed on the device.
Also helpful might be a log of the output of "ideviceinfo -d".

Thanks a lot. The log shows that it's crashing during the SSL handshake.
Your version of libimobildevice is 0.9.7 and too old.
The latest stable release is 1.0.7 and supports iOS 5.x.You need to update your libimobildevice and surrounding packages.
