    after some investigation
=> install iphone usb driver on the windows host, no change. => try to gdb usbmuxd (not a lot of success...) but device is not discover at all : I don't see the line "[...][3] Connected to v1.0 device 1 on location 0x10002 with serial number xxxx"

I definitively think the issue is in the vmware USB layer :
same cable same iphone : OK with windows host itune. same version of the libiphone libraries are ok on an exotic non-x86 architecture with same iphone, same USB cable. (the cross compilation takes some time to configure, but it was only my fault)

Ticket could be close as invalid. I'll give again a try if I test in the future an other vitualization platform.

VMWare player works fine with iPhone/USB connectivity for me. Perhaps you should kill anything iTunes related on the host computer first before attempting to access it from the virtual machine. iTunes has a few services running in the background which claim the usb device and thus the VM won't be able to access it either.
