    that lets me see the iPod and copy stuff to it, but the music I copy to it isn't shown on the iPod. tried gtkpod, rhythmbox, and banshee.

    you can unmount it with
    sudo umount ~/iPhone

    you can use gtkpod to put music on it. rhythmbox might work too.

    try mounting it manually.

    sudo usbmuxd &
    mkdir ~/iPhone
    ifuse ~/iPhone

    You might have to install ifuse.

    sudo apt-get install ifuse

    The version of libimobiledevice that comes with ubuntu is old, try upgrading.

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
