Ipod Touch 3G not detected after 4.2.1 upgrade
Reported by Mark A | December 18th, 2010 @ 07:25 PM
I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 on my iPod touch 3rd gen and updated the libimobiledevice on my Linux Mint Debian (and another Linux Mint 9) install to 1.0.4. Now when I plug in the iPod, it's not detected at all. Here's the output of lsusb:
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root
hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 09da:0006 A4 Tech Co., Ltd Optical Mouse
WOP-35 / Trust 450L Optical Mouse
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Nothing shows up in dmesg when I plug it in either.
Had no prior problems when the device was on iOS 4.0
Thanks!

- State changed from new to invalid
- Tag set to ios 4.2.1, kernel, lsusb, usb
If your device does not appear in the syslog and lsusb output after plugging in, it is not a bug within libimobiledevice but your system configuration. This looks more like something is wrong with your kernel or USB setup.
Please post the output of "tail -f /var/log/messages" when you plug the device.

I should mention that the Linux Mint 9 and LMDE setups are on different machines. When I plug the iPod in to either, nothing new pops up on /var/log/messages. The last entry is:
Dec 18 06:25:05 LMDEDESKTOP rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.6.4" x-pid="13757" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight'.
If I plug a digital camera into the same port, though, I get the following:

Thanks!

Well I tried plugging it in again after it had died (probably since I couldn't even charge it on this machine), and it started booting up. Once it booted, it took a few minutes, but it finally did register.
This was the output of /var/log/messages:
Dec 19 22:28:33 LMDEDESKTOP kernel: [183857.876099] usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4

Dec 19 22:28:33 LMDEDESKTOP kernel: [183858.013896] usb 1-6: configuration #1 chosen from 3 choicesIt automounted like it should, and I was even able to sync some podcasts to it.
Sensing this was too good to be true, though, I unmounted it, unplugged it, and tried to plug it in again. After 10 minutes, nothing showed up in the log file. So I unplugged it again and completely powered it off, hoping to replicate the condition where it actually worked. I plugged it in again, and while it did boot up, nothing showed up in the log file and the iPod did not start charging. I hate to pester since it does seem like imobiledevice is working, but something isn't in regards to the iPod, and I just can't figure out what it is.

Yeah, this sounds like an issue with your device.
If you plug in the device and do not see anything in the syslog then libimobiledevice and usbmuxd are not even in use.
You might have a few options to try:
- Do an "erase restore" using idevicerestore of iOS 4.2.1 (wipes the device clean)
- Try a different USB port, HUBs appear to cause trouble sometimes
- Try a different USB cable (original is best), some cheap China ones infact CAUSE problems due to transmission errors
- Does the syslog report anything at all when you plug in the device at the time it does't want to connect?
