iTouch 3G is not dicovered or connected
Reported by Gboy8510 | July 23rd, 2010 @ 07:41 PM
I apologize if I am in the group or forum. If I am please let me know where I can find support.
I am totally new to Linux (Ubuntu 10.4) so I am not quite sure what went wrong when I installed the software. I added the software source and it looks when I go in the software manager that all the software to connect an iTouch 3G was installed. However, when I connect the iTouch nothing happens. I use the cable that came with the iTouch and I use a USB port I knwo is working because I connected a USB drive and the was mounted to the desktop. I also do not see in the Music Player application that came with Ubuntu.
What did I miss? Is there anything I can do to verify if install was complete.
TIA

Open up a command prompt and type "usbmuxd" (without the quotes). Also, run "ifuse". If either tells you the command isn't found, you'll need to install the corresponding package.
Welcome to Linux!

When I type "usbmuxd" and hit enter nothing happens. When I type "ifuse" a message "ERROR: No mount point specified". The iTouch is connected. There is no process running "usbmuxd" when I check in system monitor.

ifuse needs to be run like so: ifuse
This is what I do in a shell to mount my iPod Touch:
usbmuxd &
mkdir /media/iPod
ifuse /media/iPod(All as root). The first command starts usbmuxd in the background. The second command creates a directory, /media/iPod, to mount the device in. It will fail if the directory exists, that's ok. Finally, I use ifuse to mount the device to /media/iPod. It doesn't show up on my desktop, but I can access the files in Nautilus.

When I type "usbmuxd" and hit enter nothing happens.
This means another instance of usbmuxd is already running. Kill all instances and then use "sudo usbmuxd -f -vvv".
To verify the install the best is to run "ideviceinfo -s".

I got it to work.Have no idea what I did different. Except that I followed your instructions and after reconnecting the iPod showed up on the desktop. Thank you all for your help. I like Linux (Ubuntu) a lot. Much better performance on an older machine than with XP for which this laptop was "designed for".
