Newly purchased songs not available in gtkpod or rhythmbox
Reported by levee | June 2nd, 2010 @ 09:38 PM
Hi all,
libimobiledevice is awesome! Thanks for everyone's hard work.
Here is my issue:
(0) I have downloaded/purchased new songs via iphone itunes both
before and after setting up libimobiledevice. They are all still
sitting there, as they should, on my phone. (1) I can not access
the songs I downloaded/purchased via iphone itunes after accessing
my phone via libimobiledevice. (2) I can access songs that were
downloaded/purchased via iphone itunes before accessing my phone
via libimobiledevice.
Sidenote:
(*) I am getting a "Extended info will not be used." warning when
clicking in gtkpod.
I do not know if (*) is related to (1)+(2), but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Clearly the simple solution is to not download songs from itunes
using my phone. However this is non-ideal, e.g.:
a) some songs are only available on itunes and I rarely use OS's
that have itunes on them (except for my phone).
b) when you're out drinking beer (or whatever), talking about
music, sometimes it's nice to download a song right there. I
mean... that is the beauty of the iphone.
... it just sucks later when you can't add that music to your main
library.
Anyway, it's not a huge issue I just thought I'd post and see if others are having this problem, or if I'm missing something simple.
thanks,
L

Hi,
this sounds like an issue with libgpod, not libimobiledevice. But some questions: You write "They are all still sitting there, as they should, on my phone", so the files are present? or do they show up in the iPod application? What do you mean with 'can not access the songs'? Are they present but you cannot play them?
You should consider asking for help in #rhythmbox on GIMPNet (IRC). You can also report a bug here http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=67873&atid=519273 -

This definitely could be a libgpod issue. Do both Rhythmbox and gtkpod use libgpod as a backend?
Originally, I thought it might even be apple doing something tricky upon pushing new songs to my iphone and recognizing that I had set up libimobiledevice. Is this possible?
As far as what I mean when I say "They are still sitting there...", I mean the songs are available through the iphone "ipod" application. However, they do not show up in gtkpod or Rhythmbox. I did not bother navigating the cryptic (to me) iphone directory structure searching for the files because I didn't know where to look.
Thanks for your help. I'll look around over at sourceforge/libgpod.

- State changed from new to invalid
Yes, Rhythmbox and gtkpod use libgpod.
No, Apple should not be able to recognized that someone is using libimobiledevice.
Hmm... so I suppose the songs may be stored different thant 'regular' songs sync'ed from the computer and thus rhythmbox/gtkpod cannot show them. But as I said, ask on #rhythmbox or report a bug, there will be someone able to help you (and you might be able to help getting the on-device purchases supported by libgpod).
I'm setting this ticket to invalid because apparently it's a libgpod issue.

A rough guess would be that libgpod is unable to handle purchased songs. Also media that is not stored in the "iTunes_Control/Music" folder like "Podcasts" and here perhaps "Purchases" is rather unsupported.
