iTunes trace documentation

Reported by ju1ius | October 16th, 2009 @ 05:56 PM

I'm trying to make an iTunes trace on winXP using usbsnoop-1.8, but I can't get it to write to the log file.
I never used windows before and the documentation is not very precise on the subject:

That program is not made to work on Vista, which it doesn't; it must run as root (MS elevate command), but will not write to the logfile even if you create an empty world writable logfile for it.
Could you make it more clear about how one can achieve that ?
I'd love to provide useful info for the project !

Judging from the error message, you have to login with an administrator account, not regular user account. Of course it says it does not work on Vista but you mention you use WinXP.

If you use Linux and have WinXP running in VMWare, creating a valueable trace is much easier as described here http://matt.colyer.name/projects/iphone-linux/index.php?title=Creat...

Apart from that I appreciate your efforts but I don't think we are in need of any more low-level traces as the protocol itself has been understood quite well by now.

What we could need help in is to expand support for other service protocols (like software_install, file_relay, backup service, profiler, ...) which we do not have yet covered in libiphone. You should create traces for yourself and contribute to the project codewise or by describing a specific service protocol.
